America will never forget… / L’America non può dimenticare

Almost two months ago I left for the U.S.A. for a month. I spent the best days of my life there; I was a tourist and a student. But I didn’t want to be just a superficial person who sees all the beautiful things and doesn’t pay any attention to what’s really around him or her.

Everything was very important to me, and nothing was stupid or meaningless. I really wanted to be a thoughtful tourist, not like everyone else, so every time a question came to me, I didn’t hesitate to stop people and ask them; and this is what I did when I visited the World Trade Center site. I wondered how New York and Newyorkers were before 9/11 and how they were now, with me standing there in front of them. The policeman who was on duty there at that moment didn’t answer my question because he was too overwhelmed by the event so I put the question to my English teacher and he told me what he was doing at the moment of the attack and how people felt; he said: “we were shocked and we thought it was an accident, but after the second tower was hit, we realized it wasn’t!”

I’m sure that all of you have heard these words before. But I wasn’t satisfied with the answer, so I put that same question to a woman I met in the subway. She hardly answered my question because it was too difficult for her. She told me that before 9/11, Newyorkers were peaceful, and walked along the streets and did ordinary things with a deep sense of trust in other people. They lived in “innocence”; New York was like a “virgin” to them. But ever since that damned day New York has not been the same, and may never again be the same because this innocence has been lost. I asked her also if people were still upset, and she told me that they were not upset anymore, but they did not want to think about that dreadful day, even though it was impossible not to, especially for those who had lost a loved one.  People are more suspicious now, whenever a horrible event happens they just panic. In spite of this I could  relate to the people’s feelings and their will to go on.

Another interesting thing I learnt in New York was that there is a strong , very strong public opinion against the Bush administration, and this is true not only here but also along the west coast; there is even a movement to impeach him; people are more suspicious now. Whenever a horrible event happens they just panic. They don’t really want Bush, and neither are they in favor of the war, but unfortunately, there is the larger mid-western area of America and the south which support Bush and his government; maybe out of ignorance or because they haven’t realized the danger of his politics yet.

And the most absurd thing is that Bush (the son) didn’t want to listen to his father’s advice and warnings against going to war in Iraq.

America is the most powerful nation in the world, and President Bush knows that. That’s why he thinks that the U.S. has the right to be the world’s policeman and if it means going to war then so be it; but America is not Bush and the “American people” don’t think so. There is a proverb that goes something like this: “whoever wants everything loses everything”, and I think that Bush is losing a big part of the good things America has represented for many years.

In conclusion this war belongs to Bush and not to the American people as many think; that’s the point I want to bring across. Even though American soldiers fight, the American people do not support it. It is not the American people’s war, it’s Bush’s !!

 

 

Circa due mesi fa sono partita per gli Stati Uniti ed ho trascorso lì i giorni più belli della mia vita. Ero una studentessa ed una turista allo stesso tempo, ma non volevo essere una semplice turista che magari vede tante bellezze ma le guarda in modo superficiale, non prestando veramente attenzione a quello che la circonda.

Ogni cosa lì per me era molto importante e per niente banale o insignificante. Per questo ho cercato di essere sì una turista ma una turista attenta; perciò, ogni qualvolta mi veniva in mente una qualsiasi domanda, non esitavo a fermare la gente per strada e chiedere. E questo è proprio quello che ho fatto quando ho visitato il World Trade Center.

Mi sono chiesta com’erano New York e i newyorchesi prima dell’11 settembre e com’erano al momento in cui io mi trovavo lì davanti a loro. Il poliziotto che era lì in servizio in quel momento non ha risposto alla domanda che gli avevo fatto, perché era troppo preso dal fatto in sé. Quindi, ho posto la domanda al mio insegnante d’inglese che mi ha risposto raccontandomi cosa stava facendo al momento dell’attentato e come si è sentita la gente. Mi ha detto: “eravamo scioccati e pensavamo fosse un incidente, ma dopo che anche la seconda Torre fu colpita ci siamo resi conto che non lo era!”

Sono sicura che ognuno di voi, cari lettori, abbia sentito parole come queste almeno una volta. Ma non ero soddisfatta da questa risposta, allora ho posto la stessa domanda ad una signora incontrata in metropolitana. Ha risposto con fatica alla mia domanda perché le era difficile; mi ha detto che prima dell’ 11 settembre i newyorchesi erano tranquilli, camminavano per le strade della città e facevano le cose ordinarie con un profondo senso di fiducia nell’altro. Vivevano nell’“innocenza” e New York era simile ad una “vergine”.

Ma da quel maledetto giorno New York non è più la stessa e forse non lo sarà più, perché quell’innocenza si è perduta. Le ho chiesto se la gente fosse ancora arrabbiata e mi ha risposto che non lo era più, ma anche che non voleva pensare a quel giorno, anche se non potrà mai dimenticare, soprattutto chi ha perso qualcuno. Nonostante tutto questo, stando lì, ho potuto veramente cogliere nell’atmosfera la voglia di andare avanti.

Un’altra cosa interessante che ho potuto imparare è che a New York c’è una forte, davvero una forte opinione pubblica contro l’amministrazione Bush e questo vale non solo qui ma anche per le due coste; c’è persino un movimento di accusa contro di lui e la gente è più sospettosa adesso, al punto tale che qualsiasi cosa di brutto succeda va in panico.

Non vogliono assolutamente Bush, né sono in favore della guerra, anche se purtroppo c’è una parte considerevole dell’America centrale e meridionale che sostiene Bush e il suo governo; forse per ignoranza o forse perché non si è resa conto di quanto sia pericolosa la sua politica. Ma la cosa più assurda è che Bush figlio non ha voluto ascoltare i consigli e gli avvertimenti di suo padre, cioè di non fare guerra all’Iraq.

L’America è la nazione più potente al mondo e il Presidente Bush lo sa bene. Ecco perché pensa che gli Stati Uniti abbiano il “diritto” di essere i “guardiani del mondo” e, se questo vuol dire andare in guerra, così sia; ma l’America non è Bush e gli americani non la pensano così. C’è un proverbio che dice: “chi troppo vuole nulla stringe”, e io penso che Bush stia perdendo buona parte della straordinaria grandezza e del mito che ha rappresentato per molti anni.

In conclusione, questa guerra appartiene a Bush e non all’America come molti pensano, e questo è il punto che voglio evidenziare. Anche se sono i soldati americani a combattere, la nazione non li sostiene in questo. Quindi non è la guerra degli americani ma di Bush!!
